Fined twice for employing illegal workers
Fined twice for employing illegal workers
2/12/2010
A restaurant has been fined £17,500 for employing illegal workers, only months after being fined £15,000 for the same offence.
Immigration officers visited on 20 October 2009 after receiving intelligence that illegal workers were employed there.
After the immigration status of staff was checked, a Chinese man and woman were found to have no legal right to be employed in the UK.
The man is due to be removed from the UK over the coming days, while steps to remove the woman are continuing.
The restaurant was issued with an on-the-spot penalty notice for employing the illegal workers.
The employers were told that to avoid a large fine they needed to prove that they carried out the correct right-to-work checks to employ workers from outside the European Union such as asking for passports or work permits.
They failed to do so and have now been handed a fine of £17,500.
It follows a similar fine of £15,000 imposed on them after five illegal migrant workers were found employed there in January last year.
On 17 January, officers found that five of the seven members of staff on duty were immigration offenders.
Three Malaysian men were removed from the UK shortly afterwards, while steps to remove a Chinese woman and man continue.
The Government is currently making a series of reforms to the UK's immigration system.
ID Cards for foreign nationals are being introduced which will help protect against identity fraud and illegal working.
The Australian-style points based system for managing migration is ensuring only those with the skills the UK needs are allowed to work.
